almanac 16 / for Okwui & Jocelyne

The same day that ICERD was adopted about half a century ago, the annual event called "almanac" will be held on the day . ICERD is a long-named convention called “International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination” and was adopted by the United Nations on December 21, 1965. The 16th Almanac will focus on Okwui Enwezor and Jocelyne Saab who died this year. It will be held only for a night with bar Kawano Ie.

As for Okwui Enwezor, an event will be held in March next year, focusing on the screening of the video of documenta 11 he directed. And we hear the acrobatic new about Sharjah Biennial next year. Okwui will serve as a director. Can you believe it? How we can memorize and think of him? Please let us know your opinions. We would also like to share thoughts of ours.

Okwui also valued documentary work, but Jocelyne Saab was a film director who has been active mainly in the field of documentary from a unique perspective. Her special feature was featured at doclisboa, a documentary film festival in Lisbon this October. At almanac, one of her masterpieces, “Children's War” (11 minutes, 1976) will be screened. As she flew back and forth between fiction and documentary, she tried to show the reality of the city, Beirut in Lebanon, where she was born and raised. We would like to think about the world, documentaries, and Okwui while watching her film that are not well known in Japan.

The annual “Bar Kwano Ie” will also open at the almanac venue. We will also prepare special alcohol and snacks for the day. We will not hold "speak alone" that screams through megaphones about the events of the year, which had held every year during the file exhibition for 14 years, but we hope we can talk about the events of the year. We look forward to your visit.
