25年前のダマスカスを中心にその周辺やパルミラ遺跡を撮影したカラー、モノクロ・プリント、約20点を中心とした展示。Palmyraはシリアの古代都市の名前で、棗椰子（ラテン語のPalma）が有名だったのでそう名付けられたといわれている。慈しみの雨を降らせる古代の豊穣神バアル・ゼブルを祀るバアル神殿が有名だが、現在、イスラム国の占拠により破壊の危機にさらされている。もっとも、バアル・セブル自身は、すでに旧約聖書でバアル・ゼブブ（蠅の王）と、邪神に貶められている。また、イスラム国の行為は蛮行として非難されるが、近くではタリバーンによるバーミヤン渓谷の仏像の破壊、ドイツの旧共和国神殿の解体などがあり、遡れば日本の廃仏毀釈など、歴史的なモニュメントの破壊行為それ自体は人類史上珍しいことではない。伊奈英次が同地を訪れる機会を得たのは、ZEIT-PHOTO SALON主宰の故石原悦郎の支援によるものだったという。失われたものを記録するという写真というメディアの特性を背景に、記憶の消去、人の喪失、そして物理的な破壊について思いを巡らせてみよう。

The exhibition contains color and mono chrome photos which taken around Damascus and at Palmyra heritage about 25 years ago. Palmyra is the name of ancient Syrian city, and is said that is caused by Palma. It’s well known by the temple of Ba'al which had been dedicated Ba'al Zəbûl who was the fertility god who lets rain of mercy down. Now, it’s in danger of destruction under ISIS occupation. Ba'al Zəbûl itself has been already denigrated as the false god as Baal-Zebubu (the Lord of the Flies) in the Old Testament. Although the destruction of ISIS are condemned as vandalism, in human history, the vandalism of historical monuments itself is not unusual, for example, the destruction of the Buddha statues of Bamiyan valley by the Taliban, the dismantle of the old Republic Palace of Germany and "Haibutsu-kishaku" in Japan. Eiji Ina's got a chance to visit there by the support of the late Mr. Etsuro Ishihara who has owned ZEIT-PHOTO SALON. In the background of the characteristics of the medium of photography that record what was lost, let’s think about erasure of memories, loss of peoples, and physical destructions.
